The Greener Side

In honor of Earth Day, April 22, here are a few tips from Adrienne Frank, FODR board of directors member, to keep us “Greener:” NOTE: She promises more in future issues. Thanks, Adrienne!

Flip the Switch. Appliances (computers, televisions, etc.) use about 50 watts of electricity in a 24-hour day when turned off but still plugged in. Your can put multiple appliances into a power strip and turnoff the strip when not in use. When you buy new appliances look for the Energy Star label.

Reduce the number of miles you travel. Driving less is one of the most CO2 -reducing actions that you can take! Plan your route, combine visits or errands, use other modes of transportation, and/or commute with others.

Reduce the amount of hot water you use. Turn on the dish washer only when full of dishes. Scrape dishes clean before putting them in the dishwasher so that you rinse less. Use an aerator on your faucet to increase air pressure and make rinsing easier. Hand washing actually saves 25% more water.

Reuse paper that has only been printed on one side. Recycle junk mail, paper, cardboard packaging, etc. Save trees and reduce the amount of energy needed to make the paper.
