President’s Message - Frank Herrin
As a new year begins and we reflect on those who have gone before us, it becomes obvious that we would not be where we are had it not been for the dedication and vision of our predecessors. Great strides have been made in the preservation of parts of Dragon Run. We have been fortunate that development pressures have not adversely impacted the pristine nature of the Dragon. But these pressures are fast approaching and we must act quickly before irreversible harm is done. Under the leadership of Tom Gregory FODR has purchased several significant parcels of land along the Dragon. We owe Tom a huge debt of gratitude for his contributions to our cause. Of course, these purchases would not have been possible without the generosity of the members of the Friends of Dragon Run and for that you too are owed a debt of gratitude. Tom’s vision and leadership have made significant contributions to our cause. Upon assuming the duties of President, I know that Tom will be a hard act to follow and I am grateful that Tom has offered to help in any way possible. Fortunately Tom has also agreed to remain property manager. I ask each of you to please continue your generous support of our organization with your time, talent and treasure. Collectively, we can accomplish much more than any of us can individually. Davis Rhodes, Rachel and Russell Williams, Adrienne Frank, Teta Kain, Anne Ducey-Ortiz, Gordon Page, Sherry Pettyjohn, John Langloh, David Milby, John Jensen, Kathryn Gregory, and so many others have worked tirelessly and unselfishly on behalf of the Friends of Dragon Run. There are now about 450 members of FODR. I urge each of you to consider joining us in our many activities. Getting out in the fresh air and seeing our properties in the changing seasons is enjoyable, rewarding and educational. Young people of all ages and genders also enjoy being in the woods and eagerly take part in helping maintain trails, marking property lines and other activities. So please invite any young people you may know to join you on your next outing with us. We also invite your thoughts concerning projects that we might be appropriate for us to undertake. Our program chairperson, Sherry Pettyjohn, has arranged for many excellent speakers at general meetings. All of these meetings have been both the educational and entertaining. The speakers presented their materials in an appealing manner for all ages. The young people in attendance at some of these meetings have all expressed their approval of the programs. It is very important to involve young people in development of a love, appreciation and respect of our natural environment. Please do not be bashful about inviting young people to accompany you to these meetings. Please come to these meetings to learn more about what is going on and to express your opinions. Also, please mark your calendars for the FODR picnic and Dragon Run Day Festival. Both events are family oriented and appropriate for all ages. We have a strong and growing organization, with excellent and dedicated officers and a wise and active Board of Directors. The membership responds quickly and effectively when called upon. Many members reside in distant areas, making it difficult for them to attend meetings and events. Others have very demanding jobs with long hours, making it difficult for them to offer full support. The financial and moral support of both of these groups is greatly appreciated. Everyone who possibly can is urged to participate as much as possible in all of our activities. As our landholdings increase, our management and up-keep responsibilities increase. Therefore, more participation from the membership is required. Our membership is very diverse and talented and you are asked to please examine your talents and match them against the needs of FODR and to please participate as much as possible. The organization has evolved over the years, and will evolve more in the future but we will remain dedicated to the preservation and protection of the natural habitat in the Dragon Run watershed. The Dragon is a beautiful place to contemplate the wonders of nature. Please take time to share and enjoy this treasure with your children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors. - Ever Save a Dragon? |
