RECOGNITION FOR
SERVICE
Although many contributed to the successful work of FODR in 2002, three special people received awards at the December business meeting for their exceptional efforts in support of the goals of FODR. Gloria Diggs was recognized for her active service on the board and for generously serving as the hostess for the general meetings. She not only organizes refreshments for numerous meetings, but she prepares some of the best deviled eggs and sweet treats! To top it off, she decorates the table with flowers from the season. Henry "Tex" Cathey was recognized for leading the initiative that named the James V. Morgan Bridge, by obtaining a legislative bill that authorized the name and organizing a successful public ceremony to unveil the signs. This project was several years long. First the Boards of supervisors from Gloucester and Middlesex were enlisted to support the naming. Then Tex contacted Delegate Bob Bloxom to sponsor the bill in the Virginia Legislature. The bill was then tracked and calls were placed to insure that it would be passed by both the House and Senate. Success was achieved in the early spring of 2002. Tex enlisted the help of many volunteers including Davis Rhodes, who served as the master of ceremonies, Lorna Anderberg, who masterminded the labels for the invitations, David Clements who engineered the parking and traffic flow, and Adrienne Frank who designed a Dragon cookie cutter and baked fabulous Dragon cookies for the celebration. The Awards Committee was chaired by Rachel Williams. Other committee members were David Clements, Christina Cramer, Lorna Wass, and Pat Tyrrell, who made the presentations. Concluding the awards ceremony was the gift of an original Teta Kain photograph of the Dragon in the springtime to John Munger for his leadership in guiding FODR for the last two terms as the President. Thank you, John! Pat Tyrrell |
