VIRGINIA FOREST STEWARDSHIP PLAN

This spring Friends of Dragon Run contracted with the Virginia Department of Forestry for a "Forest Stewardship Management Plan" on our 34 acre tract near Powcan in King and Queen County.

Goals established for the property:

1. Maintain the health of the forested wetland.

2. Soil and water conservation.

3. Wildlife habitat a) songbirds, b) waterfowl, c) non- game wildlife.

4. Maintain a scenic forest.

5. Maintain the health of the forest.

The plan divides the property into five zones and makes management recommendations based on the characteristics of each zone. The zones include a small 16 year old loblolly stand, a 30-50 year old hardwood stand and a 40-70 year old bottomland hardwood stand.

Thanks to the efforts of Warren Coburn, Area Forester, and Nelson Lofon of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, FODR has a guide to follow in managing this property in future years. The plan will be available at the September General meeting for anyone who would like to see the results of their work.
