MEET THE VICE PRESIDENT

Tom Gregory loves to be outside. He loves mountains and woods and streams. An avid hiker, he has maintained trails and shelters on the Appalachian and Big Blue Trails.

After receiving a FODR brochure from Teta Kain, who was at the time leading a Nature Walk at Hickory Hollow, he decided to test the waters of Dragon Run and found a group of folks who also love the out of doors, and additionally have a burning commitment to preserve the Dragon Run Stream. Before he knew what was happening, he was picking up roadside trash and walking the Dragon properties.

A few paddle trips later, he was hooked and Teta persuaded him to accept the job of property manager for our preserves, and to serve as a director on the board. Since then he has studied the Dragon and taken every opportunity to learn about its features and best management, at times spending hours pouring over satellite photos of its water shed.

Tom is active in the Northern Neck Audubon Society, serves as a Director on the Board and Chairman of the Hickory Hollow Committee. He is kept intermittently busy at the Rappahannock River Valley Wildlife Refuge and at various state preserves with projects requiring volunteer labor.

When the FODR slate of Officers for 2003 did not include a candidate to run for vice president, a position which assumes becoming president after the term is over, a group of board members lobbied an effort to tap Tom for that position. He is excited about the opportunity and grateful for the chance to be at the forefront of such a dynamic organization.

Tom retired from federal service in 1996. He and wife, Kathryn, moved to the Northern Neck in 1998 where they enjoy the peace of living in an area with numerous opportunities for communing with unspoiled nature in the out of doors.
