PICNIC 2006
Frank Herrin

October 14 dawned cool and clear, the coldest morning of the season. As the sun warmed the landscape it was apparent that we were to be blessed with another truly glorious day for the annual picnic.

The early arrivals soon had the area set up and lapsed into easy conversation as they sat on tailgates and lawn chairs drinking hot drinks while awaiting the food and picnickers. Suddenly we realized that no food had arrived and in less than an hour hungry hordes would descend on the banks of tranquil Dragon Run. Would it remain tranquil when they discovered there was no food? There was some speculation about what we could do with no food, but right on cue a cornucopia of food began to appear.

What a feast we had! Barbeque, fried chicken, homemade rolls, a beautiful selection of salads, deviled eggs, and if that were not enough, the wonderful desserts made the meal complete. The wooded shore of Dragon Run was the backdrop and we enjoyed the fellowship of old and new friends as we enjoyed the delicious food.

After feasting on wonderful food and enjoying good company, many were happy for the opportunity to walk off some of the extra calories exploring the trails. Others enjoyed kayaking on the river.

As attendees began to drift away, it was time to pack up. Many willing hands made quick work of this task and the site was returned to the usual inhabitants. Another FODR picnic is history.

The volunteers that made this event possible deserve a huge, “Thank you!” It would not be possible to put on a party of this magnitude if it were not for the host of people who so generously donated their time, talents and treasures. FODR is very fortunate to have so many of these fine folk in its ranks.

Please accept my personal thanks for making my job so pleasant and easy. -
