FILL THAT EMPTY HOLE IN YOUR YARD WITH A BALD CYPRESS

We correlate Bald Cypress with the swamp but Bald Cypress can also be grown on uplands. It prefers sun and is a slow grower. But it will make a beautiful specimen tree and lives for hundreds of years. It is a strong tree and can withstand wind. A forester in James City County stated in a recent article in the Daily Press that after Hurricane Isabel he had not seen a single cypress that lost its top.

Fall is good time to plant trees. If you have lots of room to fill you might consider ordering seedlings from the Virginia Forestry Dept. Check with your county forester or go to the Virginia Department of Forestry web site for a catalog. They ship in February and early March.

Five years ago we planted some of these seedlings and they are now about 12 feet tall.                   Lorna Anderberg
