Are you aware that four kayakers became
lost in the Dragon on a Sunday, in
mid October of 2000? They put in at Route 603 (Mascot) and planned to take
out at route 17, a few hours later. As daylight began to fade they
realized that they were not going to make it to their destination.
They used a cell phone to call 911. Rescuers searched for five
hours before bringing the cold and tired kayakers out of the swamp.
The following precautions can not be stressed enough when paddling
into any wilderness area:
- File a float plan. Let friends or family know where you plan to paddle.
- Take a cell phone in a water proof container.
- Make sure personal flotation devices are worn by everyone.
- Wear quick drying clothing, appropriate for the season.
Take a change of clothing for each person, stored in dry bags. Insulated underwear
is a must in cool weather, along with a hat or cap.
- Take plenty of food and water, even for short trips.
(You might be out there longer than you planned).
- Carry a first-aid kit appropriate for the size of the group.
- Have rescue whistles for everyone.
- Carry flashlights and extra batteries.
- Take a weather band radio along.
- If you are unfamiliar with the area you plan to
explore, get input from someone who is familiar with it.
