Friends of Dragon Run Host Fellows from the Institute for Integrative Conservation

IIC Staff, Students, & Affiliates:  Robert Rose (USA), Alexandra Sabo (USA), Anita Hagy Ferguson (USA), Carolina de Oliveira Jordao (Brazil), Pallabi Kundu (India), Michael Fenomanarivo (Conservation International - Madagascar), and Ethan Stewart (USA)
These early and mid-career professionals, known as Fellows for the Conservation Catalyst, were part of a three-week leadership academy organized by The Institute for Integrative Conservation at William & Mary University directed by Dr. Robert Rose. The academy aims to foster leadership skills, facilitate knowledge sharing, and cultivate a global network of inclusive and innovative conservation advocates.

The curriculum supports the development of leadership competency, knowledge exchange, and building a network of inclusive, innovative, and collaborative conservation leaders. It covers topics ranging from conflict resolution, entrepreneurial thinking, fundraising, public speaking, wellness, community engagement, and reimagining what conservation can look like.

Over the three weeks, the cohort strengthened their leadership skills with experts from across campus and the IIC’s network of partners. The cohort will also visit the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) and the W&M Washington Center, and take in regional activities, like a paddle in the Dragon Run Wilderness Area.

In June of 2024, nine emerging leaders from Kenya Wildlife Conservancies Association (Kenya), Oglulului Community Wildlife Rangers Association (Kenya), One Tree Planted (Kenya), Third Pole Conservancy (Nepal), Centre for Sustainability (Philippines), and Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund (Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo) experienced this remarkable opportunity. As a capstone to their program, the Fellows embarked on an exploratory paddling trip down Dragon Run.
