The Local Scoop and Irvington Artist Team Up to Feature Dragon Run

​Members of Friends of Dragon Run (FODR) and the public have the opportunity hang a piece of Dragon Run on their walls.  The Local Scoop is devoting most of the spring issue to sharing this pristine ecosystem with readers.  The magazine commissioned Irvington Artist, Christian Johnson, to create a colorful drawing of the Dragon that captures many of its unique features.

The spring issue covers almost everything about the Dragon and includes stunning photos taken on one of FODR’s kayak trips by photographer Cory Miller.  The real gem is Christian Johnson’s colorful artwork on the cover. In the print, Johnson includes a multitude of details that define Dragon Run: a crew member pulling a beaver gate, bald cypress trees and knees, a bald eagle, a heron, a muskrat, a beaver, kayakers, and dragonflies—lots of dragon flies.
 
The Local Scoop printed 250 copies of Johnson’s print and generously donated 200 signed copies of the print to FODR.  FODR will sell the posters—framed and unframed—on our website (DragonRun.org), at spring paddle trips, and at other FODR events.
 
After paddling down the Dragon on one of FODR’s kayak trips last year, Local Scoop editor Morgan Sanders decided to devote one of the Local Scoop issues to Dragon Run. “Christian Johnson's interpretive cover illustration for the spring 2022 The Local Scoop magazine captures the multi-sensory experience of paddling the Dragon Run, Virginia's cleanest and best-preserved blackwater stream. My Local Scoop team and I are delighted to support the Friends of Dragon Run, the all-volunteer stewards of the Dragon, through the sale of signed, limited edition prints of Johnson's illustration,” said Morgan Sanders.
 
“We are overwhelmed by The Local Scoop’s generous gift to FODR and by the magazine’s extensive coverage of the Dragon,” said FODR President Jeff Wright.” We are also grateful to Christian Johnson for the use of his print,” added Wright.  “The Dragon is unique, magical, and memorable.  Now, our members, paddlers, and supporters can have a piece of the Dragon in their homes,” Wright concluded.
